Mellon Fellowships in Critical Bibliography at Rare Book School

Rare Book School (RBS) at the University of Virginia welcomes applications from Chaucerians and medievalists to the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship of Scholars in Critical Bibliography.  The aim of this Mellon Foundation-funded fellowship program is to reinvigorate bibliographical studies within the humanities by introducing doctoral candidates, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty to specialized skills, methods, and professional networks for conducting advanced research with material texts. RBS selected forty Mellon Fellows in 2013 and 2014, and will admit an additional twenty fellows to the program in the spring of 2015.

Fellows will receive funding for RBS course attendance, as well as generous stipends, and support for research-related travel to special collections, over the course of three years. Courses at RBS cover topics such as paleography (taught by Consuelo Dutschke), codicology (taught by Albert Derolez), and scholarly editing (taught by David Vander Meulen).

The deadline for application to the program is MONDAY 1 DECEMBER 2014. Humanities Librarian, The College of New Jersey  

The Library at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for a 12-month, tenure-track Humanities Librarian.  The successful candidate will be oversee collection development and management as well as provide reference and instructional support for the departments of English; History; Philosophy, Religion, and Classical Studies; and Art and Art History.  In addition, the Humanities Librarian will provide general reference service and will be expected to carry out scholarly and service activities required to attain tenure.

Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited master’s degree and a broad knowledge of humanities information resources.  Educational background and/or experience in a relevant humanities discipline.  Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.  Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Initiative, flexibility, and a strong service orientation.

Preferred Qualifications: Significant experience using resources in the humanities. Work experience in academic libraries, particularly collection development, reference and instruction.  Knowledge of current and emerging instructional technologies.  Knowledge of current assessment issues/trends in academic libraries. Record of professional service and/or scholarship. Additional graduate degree in an appropriate discipline is highly desirable.

Drafting Editor Position at Dictionary of Old English

The Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto, invites applications for a position as Drafting Editor at the Dictionary of Old English. This is a grant-funded contractually limited term appointment for three years, with the possibility of renewal, at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment will begin on January 1, 2015.

The successful candidate will have a PhD by time of appointment or shortly thereafter. Applicants must also demonstrate a deep familiarity and expertise with the Corpus of Old English and have excellent research ability. The successful candidate will have teaching experience and will be expected to contribute to teaching in the graduate program in the Centre for Medieval Studies. Knowledge of medieval Latin is essential and proficiency in a cognate Germanic language is desirable. The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to draft entries for the Dictionary of Old English.

This position offers a rare opportunity to participate in team research in the humanities, and therefore the ability to work well with other members of the project and to complete entries efficiently and expeditiously to deadline is of paramount importance. The position also involves outreach to the public, so the ability to communicate the project’s research in a dynamic, engaging manner is also essential. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship is happy to announce the 2015 Foremother's Prize. 
Funded through the generous gift of royalties from the editors and authors of the Oxford Handbook of Women and Gender in Medieval Europe (Judith Bennett and Ruth Mazzo Karras, eds.), the grant provides $2,000 for a graduate student to undertake a significant professional development initiative. The winner will be partnered with a senior medieval feminist scholar whose guidance and association can assist her in developing and executing the project.
Such projects might include:
  • Travel to a conference relevant to medieval feminist scholarship, for instance, the annual Gender and Medieval Studies Conference in the U.K.
  • Travel to visit archives, research libraries, museums, manuscript collections, or archeological or architectural sites
  • Travel to conduct other forms of on-site research
  • Development of a digital humanities project related to feminist research
  • Organizing of a medieval feminist conference or colloquium
  • Travel to allow sustained work with a mentor
SMFS is especially interested in assisting students whose projects are not otherwise funded. The winner must be willing to write a reflective report describing the outcome of the project that will appear on the SMFS public website.

Lecturer in Old and Middle English, UCD School of English, Drama and Film (Permanent)

Applicants are invited for a permanent appointment as Lecturer (below the bar) in Old and Middle English (specialising in Old English), located within the UCD School of English, Drama and Film. 

The successful candidate will teach in the BA programme in English and in the MA in Medieval English Literature and Culture. S/he will have expertise in Old English, with a doctorate in the area and a research record in the field, as well as prior experience of teaching at third level. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a willingness to teach Middle English and be able to supervise and mentor MA and PhD students.

Note: It is envisaged this appointment will commence on 1 January 2015.

2013 (2010) Lecturer (BTB) Salary Scale: €35,355 – €56,602 per annum

2013 (2011) Lecturer (BTB) Salary Scale: €31,820 – €50,942 per annum*
* Subject to all new entrants to public sector as of 01 January 2011
